And it’s been that way since 1944, when brothers Claude and Rayburn Ramsey founded Ramsey Brothers Tool & Die in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to manufacture parts, tools, and dies for Douglas Aircraft Company. In 1945, Claude Ramsey designed a front-mounted winch, the Model 101. This new winch was specifically designed for passenger cars and pickup trucks and drew its power from the crankshaft. The Ramsey Winch was perfect for pulling vehicles out of mud and snow and over the years it became the mainstay of the towing and recovery industry. The product was a success, and demand for Ramsey Winches was so high that in 1947 the Ramsey brothers renamed their company Ramsey Brothers Winch Company. In fact, due to the significant impact that Ramsey Winch had on the Towing and Recovery industry, in 1987 the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame inducted Claude Ramsey as the first member who was not actually a part of the Towing and Recovery industry.
