WEvolution UK
www.srgmovement.comWe support people and communities to start Self-Reliant Groups. A Self-Reliant Group (SRG) is an informal group of people who come together to support each other, save small amounts of money, learn new skills and, in time, go on to establish microenterprises. In other words, SRGs are a space for people to meet, save and create. An SRG is a collective of 3 or more members with the following key markers: 1. Saving regularly 2. Meeting regularly 3. Sharing and rotating responsibilities Isolation – both economic and social – is a real experience for a number of people in society today. SRGs provide an antidote for this increasingly common problem of isolation. SRGs enable a collective context for people to come unstuck, to become their better selves and create their financial futures including starting up microenterprises. WEvolution encourage a group to have at least 3 members and/or more before they go on to be formally recognised as an SRG. A commitment to meeting regularly has several healthy advantages for an SRG: it helps build a safe space to people to share their hopes and struggles, bond together and get to know each other especially in the early life of the group; it helps provide a more structured communication where everyone is heard and helps create a time and space for sorting out any issues; and, it gives an opportunity for people to make time to establish the direction of their group as well as their own personal journeys. Savings introduces commitment, ownership and trust in a group. It is more than just a contribution; savings can help create economic assets and enables the group to invest in their enterprising ideas, without having to depend on an outside source or a hand out. As trust is built up, accumulated savings also become a means to support group members with small consumption or ideas loans. The SRG is a space for its members to recover their agency and their sense of control over their lives.
