People Design Co-operative
www.peoplecooperative.comPeople Design Co-operative (PDC) is a shared and democratic space for those who are working to make meaningful contributions to the design of cities and housing with new, more equitable, approaches. We are a research and design firm built upon shared values and a belief that lived experience and curiosity should precede formal credentials. Our work focuses on increasing visibility to those who contribute to the creation of our built environment with a commitment to centering the voices of equity-deserving communities, and to the evolution of sustainable design practices that reduce carbon and protect our planet. Today, we practice in the spaces of design, architecture, building science, ethnographic research, engagement, experimentation and play. People was established in 2021 - after nearly a year of thoughtful preparation, consultation and experimentation, and more than a decade of practicing sustainable architecture and equitable community building - during the height of a global pandemic where widening inequities and a dramatic reorganisation of our society has created an opportunity to think, work and gather in more fair and just ways. In Canada, the architecture and design of our homes, cities and environment is informed and dominated by Western Eurocentrism. This cognitive orientation is overwhelmingly entrenched in thought and in practice, throughout the systems that control decisions and finances, accelerating inequities and reinforcing the status quo. People is a resistance to the status quo; to systemic inequities that control and inform every significant decision around the design of our built environment, and the processes through which individuals and organisations shape our cities and communities. Our practice was established to challenge these historical biases and create space for more inclusive practices and perspectives, in order to build better systems that produce more equitable outcomes.
