The Western Front Way
www.thewesternfrontway.comThe Western Front Way is a new, long distance, walking route for peace and reflection. Inspired by the words of a young soldier, AD Gillespie, in a letter home from the front line of the First World War in 1915, who dreamt of creating a ‘beautiful road’ for all nations to walk together in peace once the conflict was over. We have created a 1000km long walking route that echoes the line of the Western Front. The Western Front Way is the biggest single commemorative project underway on the globe at this time. Marked by over 200 plaques in key villages, towns and sites from Pfetterhouse in the Alps in the South to Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast in the North, the Western Front Way travels through some of the most beautiful and varied countryside shaped by compelling human stories and experiences. Walkers and cyclists are free to choose their own paths as they travel from plaque to plaque, creating their own adventures and memories. We invite everyone to walk the Western Front Way in peace and reflection and ‘to build paths to unite lives, not walls to divide them’.
