Greater Birmingham Humane Society
www.gbhs.orgThe Greater Birmingham Humane Society, founded in 1883, is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama. Over the course of our history we have witnessed the changes in our community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips “to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services.” The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is an open access humane society, meaning that we will accept any animal in need of our services. We have two divisions: GBHS Animal Care & Control: The Greater Birmingham Humane Society provides animal care & control to many cities in the Greater Birmingham/Jefferson County area. We regulate uncontrolled domestic animals, assist with bites and attacks by aggressive animals (depending on the jurisdiction), investigate reports of possible animal cruelty and neglect, pick up stray animals, pick up confined strays, pick up loose animals without proper rabies identification, rescue injured animals, keep records of lost/found cats and dogs, give animal information and referrals, and promote responsible pet ownership through education. GBHS Animal Care & Adoptions: Our state-of-the-art adoption center at 300 Snow Drive can house around 300 adoptable pets in need of homes. These pets are both owner surrendered pets and rescued strays from GBHS Animal Care & Control. Our caring and well-trained staff of animal care technicians and adoption counselors provides care to the pets and assists the public with making informed choices about adopting pets into families in the community.
