The Southside Virginia Association of REALTORS® mission is to be the voice for real estate in Southside Virginia and enhance our Member's ability to be respected professionals. SVAR was formed in 1955 and was later incorporated in the State of Virginia in 1963 and is a 501 (c) 6 organization. The Internal Revenue Service distinguishes this classification as an organization devoted to the improvement of business conditions of one or more lines of business. It is not engaged in any regular business typically carried on by for-profits. Trade associations and professional associations are considered to be business leagues. The mission of a 501 (c) 6 organization must focus on the advancement of the conditions of a particular trade or the interests of the community. It may further its exempt purposes through lobbying as its primary activity without jeopardizing its exempt status. SVAR is part of a three way agreement that includes the National Association and Virginia Association of REALTORS®. The National Association of REALTORS® represents the largest trade organization in the country having an approximate Membership of just less than 1.1M. The jurisdictional boundaries served by SVAR are as follows: The cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg, and the towns of Chester, Emporia, Ettrick and the counties of Dinwiddie, Greensville, Prince George, Surry, Sussex and that part of Chesterfield County lying south of a line starting at Dutch Gap on the James River and extending in a westerly direction across Chesterfield County to its western boundary.
