Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO)

www.acto.ca

We are a specialty community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario to serve low-income tenants across Ontario. ACTO works for the advancement of human rights and justice in housing through legal advice & representation, law reform, public legal education, community organizing, and training. ACTO is a non-partisan and non-governmental advocacy organization. Our client community includes a broad range of people living on lower incomes who do not own their homes including residential tenants, members of non-profit housing co-operatives, homeless people and those who rent homes not subject to the Residential Tenancies Act. ACTO also manages the Tenant Duty Counsel Program (TDCP) across Ontario. TDCP staff provide advice, legal assistance, resources and referrals to unrepresented tenants on the day of their hearing at the Landlord and Tenant Board. Priority is given to tenants facing eviction. TDCP staff also provide advice to tenants who have been illegally locked out or who have sheriff notices or eviction orders.
