Between 170,000 and over 500,000 children live in an estimated 8,000 orphanages in Indonesia. Locally, these places are known as panti asuhan. There has been little scholarly research into conditions in these institutions and their impacts on children. The Indonesian Orphanages Research Centre presents the known scholarly research about panti asuhan. It seeks to encourage more research, thereby supporting efforts to reduce unnecessary reliance on these institutions in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Indonesia is a signatory. The founding editor is Dr Brian Babington, who has extensively researched Indonesia’s orphanages. He leads a not-for-profit body that strives to improve child and family wellbeing and works internationally to support children's rights.
